[edit]Since this category survived Categories for Deletion, I have restored it to be a subcategory of Category:Botanists. Even though some people clearly don't want this to happen, the category has been kept - so it ought to be categorised itself. There's no point keeping the category then not putting it into subcategories! However, please do not move botanists out of Category:Botanists and into their nationality subcategory. In order to help taxoboxes work, all botanists ought to be listed in Category:Botanists. You may wish to dual list a German botanist's article under both Category:German botanists and Category:Botanists (though note that it is usually not considered good practice to list an article in both a category and its subcategory), or leave it purely in Category:Botanists. However, do not remove the article entirely from Category:Botanists. --VivaEmilyDavies 18:14, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Categories: Botanists by various nationalities
[edit]These are not useful. It breaks up the complete list of botanists at Category:Botanists, thereby making pages much harder to find when one needs to know (a) if a particular botanist has a page, and (b) what the page is titled, when adding links at e.g. a plant named by that botanist. Botanists are also highly international in their work, and the their nationality is often completely irrelevant to the areas they worked in, making it hard to predict what their nationality might have been (e.g. Siebold worked mainly on Japanese plants while based at a Dutch mission, making it very hard to know that he can only be found listed at Category:German botanists). These subcategories would be best deleted, or at the very least, any botanist listed at one of these subcategories must also be on the full list at Category:Botanists - MPF 14:44, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Concur with that. This is a plain example of overcategorization. Since it is bad practice for an element to be both in one category and its parent category, the obvious step is to delete this. Radiant! 20:18, Feb 24, 2005 (UTC)
The vote for deletion has been archived as unresolved: discussion Wincoote 02:35, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Wish I'd known about this change before - botanists are now inconsistent with the rest of WP's categorization, makes things harder for us who do more than just botanical organization. The small cat argument is bogus, because we expect to add many hundreds more as time goes on. Stan 02:33, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
