[edit]This category was renamed from Category:Languages of Gambia after the category was listed for renaming on January 18, 2005. The following is the discussion from CFD.

- Oppose. "Languages of Gambia" is in agreement with other cat names, such as category:Languages of Senegal, and the rest of Category:Languages of Africa. Mikkalai 03:24, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Um, no, that's not right. The name of Senegal is Senegal. The name of The Gambia -- officially -- is The Gambia. So Category:Languages of The Gambia is correct. To say "Languages of Gambia" is like saying "Languages of United States" -- ungrammatical and incorrect. Move to Category:Languages of The Gambia Grutness|hello? 11:41, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I agree that The Gambia seems to be the accepted usage. -- Beland 03:39, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Oppose. It should be Category:Languages of the Gambia, instead. -- Naive cynic 21:46, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- The country name is spelt The Gambia, not the Gambia ("the Gambia" is the river that runs through the country). Grutness|hello?
- It doesn't seem to fit the capitalization conventions of English. Besides, even on the official home page of the Gambian government, the first sentence, a "message from the President", says: We want to transform the Gambia into a trading, export-oriented agricultural and manufacturing nation (...). -- Naive cynic 23:23, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Well, The Gambia was certainly the correct capitalisation when my father worked there... I note that you didn't quote the title of the website that that is on, which is titled "Republic of The Gambia Official Website" <www.gambia.gm/>. Neither did you quote that website's mission statement: "Providing leadership, direction, pro and re-active facilitation to private sector and public sector institutions for an aggressive and focused drive for maximization of sustainable growth of The Gambia's Foreign Trade." The CIA World Factbook website also lists the country's conventional long-form name as "Republic of The Gambia", and uses the capitalised for "The Gambia" within sentences in its descriptions of the country's economy. - If one looks at Category:The Gambia, there is mixed usage of the vs The although the former has the majority. These should all be made consistent, whichever is the correct usage. RedWolf 07:04, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)
